Information from the Tennessee Valley Authority.

Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is the nation’s largest public power company, with 33,000 megawatts of dependable generating capacity. Through locally owned distributors, TVA provides power to about 8.7 million residents of the Tennessee Valley.

TVA is responsible for the management of 293,000 acres of public land and 11,000 miles of public shoreline in the Tennessee Valley.

Douglas and other TVA reservoirs were built during World War II. Douglas Dam is on the French Broad River in east Tennessee. The reservoir extends 43 miles upriver from the dam through the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains.

Douglas Lake stores spring rainwater for release during the dry summer and fall months to maintain adequate depth for navigation on the Tennessee River and to generate electricity. Water levels begin dropping in late summer to provide space for the next spring’s rains.

Anglers! Douglas Lake has many of your favorite sport fish: Black Bass, Black Crappie, Crappie, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Walleye and White Crappie.
